The Toxic Encounter Debrief

Tell us what happened. We’ll help you figure out what to do next.

Toxic encounters can involve criticism, manipulation, gossip, provocation, control, disrespect, emotional dumping, boundary violations, or repeated destabilizing behavior — at work, in families, in friendships, in relationships, in communities, and online.

This tool won’t tell you what’s wrong with the other person, and it won’t tell you what to do about them. It helps you steady yourself and decide how you want to respond — which is the part you control.

A note on safety

If an encounter involves physical violence, threats, stalking, or fear for your safety, that’s beyond what a worksheet can hold. Please talk to someone who can help with real safety planning.

National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.

In immediate danger, call 911.

This is a tool for personal reflection. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace care from a licensed professional. In crisis, call or text 988 (US).
